World Walking - 18 million steps to go!
Become the hundredth member! Our Heart &
Sole Challenge 2015 to promote cardiac rehabilitation worldwide with our
colleagues in Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland has been making great strides
since it was launched in February. So far 98 people
and services, including the BACPR Council led by your very own President, Prof.
Gill Furze, have actively participated in the Challenge. Together they have
completed 78% of the epic 34,000 mile virtual walk around the world. The 62 million
steps that have been walked so far have taken us all the way through Europe,
Asia and Australia, across the Indian Ocean to the southern tip of Africa and
onwards across the Atlantic Ocean to South America. Our World Walkers are now walking from Brazil
to Mexico before turning for home via North America. This month, the
members of the ‘Walks of Life’ groups of the Cardiac Health Foundation of
Canada will be joining our Challenge as part of their 50th
Anniversary celebrations. Another connection
made as a result of our virtual worldwide walk has been with the ‘Heartmoves’
cardiac rehabilitation group in Quirindi Community Hospital in New South Wales
in Australia who are planning to walk from Australia to Greenock, to ‘meet’ the
Inverclyde Globetrotters; the cardiac rehabilitation group behind the World
Walking website we are using for our Challenge. The ‘Heartmoves’ group
aim to start on June 10th to coincide with the Australian National Heart Foundation’s ‘Go Red For Women’ campaign to help beat the single biggest
killer of Australian women. With 18 million
steps still to be walked before we get home, it’s not too late to join in. Just click on this link and become the
